Satisfactory - Steam Game Review!
So, you're wondering whether you should buy Satisfactory from Steam? Well, you're reading the right review!
Have you heard of Satisfactory before? If you haven't, it's basically a game where you're dumped on an abandoned planet by a rich corporation (I'd make a guess that they pay pretty well to persuade employees to partake in this) and are left to build up a factory using resources you collect from the surrounding environment. You slowly progress through different stages, and unlock new resources and factory items by providing your HUB with requested items!
As you build up your factory, you can automate the processes, which is very satisfying (or should I say satisfactory-ing... ok sorry, I'll stop, that doesn't even make sense 😑). Eventually, the goal is to be able to provide and automate the production of any item, quickly and efficiently.
And did I mention, there are monsters around that attempt to kill you if you go near them!
Let's begin the review!
Gameplay Opinion:
The aim of the game, as I mentioned above, is to automate the processes of your factory, in order to produce any material you want automatically. To start off, you need to manually collect resources from the environment, while also bumping into strange creatures along the way.
One of the creatures that roam the planet - a "Space Giraffe-Tick-Penguin-Whale Thing"
Once you have gotten some resources, you can set up your first portable miner - the first automated thing you have, which will mine resources into its inventory for you, from an ore node. Over time, you will unlock big mining machines, which can output ores onto a conveyor, so you can then feed them through other machines.
To unlock new items to use in your factory, you have to provide your HUB with some materials that it asks for - you can get these materials by creating manufacturing lines and automating the whole process. Once the required items have been provided, you will unlock the next level of items!
Slowly, your factory will become more advanced, and you will begin to automate more and more, with better conveyors, machines, power supplies, etc...
Is it fun?
Well, in my opinion - 100%! I got this game just after Christmas and quickly racked up the hours of playtime because this game was really addictive to play. Having to plan the most efficient way to build your factory, as well as how to automate every process to save you time, keeps you engaged with the game and requires lots of concentration (but that's a good thing in this game!).
If you're quite creative, you may also have the added challenge of trying to make your factory look really nice. Or you could be like me, and just build conveyors and machines anywhere you can fit them:
My "very neat and tidy..." factory 😂
Does it need a good computer?
Luckily, this isn't one of those games that requires you to be working out of NASA's lab with a direct connection to a power station. I personally run the game on my laptop, which has an Intel Core i5 (10th Generation), and 8GB RAM, with 4 cores @ 1GHz each. Amazingly, when I run the game with Razer Cortex game booster, it runs really, really smoothly with the lower graphics quality, with the quality still looking decent!
This means that you hopefully will be able to play the game on a lower-end PC or Laptop without any issues, as long as you're willing to play with a lower graphics quality.
I have experienced one issue, which is where after about 20-30 minutes of continuous gameplay, my laptop starts heating up and will have lag spikes that last for about 10 seconds, occurring every 5-10 minutes. This is annoying, but it's manageable and doesn't make me dislike playing the game. And it probably won't be an issue for you if you have a PC or something with a better fan.
Summary:
You should definitely try out Satisfactory. It's become one of my favourite video games because it is just so addictive. And the cherry on top is that it doesn't even need an amazing gaming PC to run, as it should be playable on a laptop with decent specs, even one not designed for gaming (like mine).
